The HMFA Teacher Training Programme

Course Overview

Trainees on the Primary School Direct Training will study the following modules:

  • Pedagogy and Management (PAM) – how children learn, what affects their learning and what teachers can do to improve learning for children. There is a specific focus on behaviour management and learners as active participants
  • The Primary Subject Study (PSS) – small scale school based enquiry
  • Core subject modules to help prepare you to teach English, Mathematics and Science
  • Foundation subject module to include ICT, History, Geography, Music, PE, Design and Technology and RE


  • The School Direct course contains

  • School mentoring and University Tutor support throughout the programme
  • Taught days at the University with subject specialist university tutors to link theory and classroom practice and to support research into written assignments
  • On – going assessments against the Teacher’s Standards
  • Collation of a portfolio of evidence throughout the course for meeting the Teacher’s Standards


  • Trainee Requirements

    We are looking to select trainees with outstanding potential with a commitment and enthusiasm for working with our children.
    The academic requirements set out by the Teaching Agency are;

  • A minimum grade ‘C’ or equivalent in GCSE English, Mathematics and Science
  • An honours degree (2:2 or above)
  • Successful completion of skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy (see below)
  • Significant evidence of recent school experience in a teaching setting

    Troops to Teachers

    Troops to Teachers will provide teacher training opportunities to service leavers – with significant extra benefits.

    Pupils deserve exceptional teachers. That’s why the Troops to Teachers non-graduate programme are targeting outstanding Service leavers like you to train as teachers of the future.

    We believe that with your skills and experience, you have a great deal to offer our schools. And, in return, we have much to offer you: the opportunity to train for a deeply rewarding career and the sense of doing something that really matters. The Troops to Teachers non-graduate programme is available in England, and is open to all non-graduate Service leavers who are currently in the resettlement cycle.

    Successful applicants will have access to teaching experiences at HMFA (Herefordshire Marches Federation of Academies) which consists of 7 primary schools that vary in size. The teaching experiences will take place in different size schools in urban and rural areas. Trainees work alongside expert teachers and fantastic children.

    The School Direct route puts school at the heart of the process and will provide a sustained school experience throughout the year giving success applicants the opportunity to be fully immersed in the school community.
